Proserpine Sugar was established in 1897; it is located in the sugar town of Proserpine which is the gateway to the Whitsundays, 74 islands located in the centre of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. The mill is owned and run by the Proserpine Co-operative Sugar Milling Association Limited and produces raw sugar, blackstrap molasses and “Green” electricity all from renewable sugar cane.
Proserpine Sugar commissioned the digestors in November 2009 producing furfural from bagasse.
The plant which is highly automated worked well. Due to important maintenance tasks on the sugar mill boilers optimisation of the process and commissioning of the distillation will have to wait until cane crushing resumes next June.
